How it works
What this tool makes
In Japan, a hanko (also called inkan, 印鑑) is a personal name seal stamped in red ink to sign documents, in the same everyday role a handwritten signature plays in many other countries. An informal, everyday hanko used for routine paperwork (rather than a legally registered seal) is called a 認印 (mitomein). This tool draws a round, mitomein-style stamp image from a short name you type, entirely with the browser's Canvas API — no images are uploaded or downloaded from a server.
Depending on how many characters you enter, the layout is:
- 1 character: one large character centered in the circle
- 2 characters: stacked in two rows (a common way two-character Japanese surnames are arranged on a real hanko)
- 3 characters: stacked in three rows
- 4 characters: a 2×2 grid, read left-to-right, top-to-bottom
Real engraved hanko — especially company seals — sometimes use more elaborate radial arrangements or a right-to-left reading order. This tool intentionally uses the simpler layouts above, prioritizing clarity for a free, casual tool over replicating every convention of traditional seal engraving.
The circle outline and the characters are both drawn in your chosen ink color (vermillion red by default). The background is left transparent, so the resulting PNG can be placed on top of white or non-white document backgrounds without an awkward white box around it.
What this is for (and isn't)
This tool produces a PNG image suitable for informal, everyday use — for example, stamping an internal document, a routing slip, or a form while working remotely. It is not a substitute for a legally registered seal (実印, jitsuin, used for major contracts) or a bank seal (銀行印, ginkouin). If you need a legally binding signature or seal for a contract, use your registered seal or a proper e-signature/e-contract service.
This is a general-purpose image generator and does not carry any legal weight on its own. For situations that require a legally valid signature or seal, please use a registered hanko or a proper e-signature service.
FAQ
Is the name I type sent anywhere?
No. The stamp is generated entirely in your browser using the Canvas API, and no data is ever transmitted externally.
Can I use this instead of my registered seal (jitsuin) or bank seal?
No. This tool creates a simple image for informal, everyday use, such as internal documents. It is not a substitute for a legally registered seal (実印) or bank seal (銀行印). For situations requiring a legally valid signature or seal, use your registered hanko or a proper e-signature/e-contract service.
How many characters can I enter?
Up to 4 characters. This tool is designed for a short surname (for example 佐藤 or 鈴木), but any text up to 4 characters will work.
Is the background transparent?
Yes. The downloaded PNG has a transparent background, so it won't show an awkward white box when placed on a non-white background in a Word, Excel, or PDF document.
Can I use a color other than red?
Yes. You can pick any ink color from the color picker. The default is a traditional vermillion red, but you can change it to black, indigo, or any color you like.
