How it works
What is a fan sign (uchiwa)?
At Japanese concerts and idol events, fans often hold up a large, colorful paper fan called an "uchiwa" with a member's name or a short cheer message printed on it in oversized letters, so the performer can spot it from the stage. This tool generates the text artwork you print and glue onto the fan itself; it doesn't produce the physical fan shape.
Canvas size
The canvas is sized to match a standard jumbo fan sign printed on A3 landscape paper (420mm x 297mm), converted to pixels at a 150dpi print resolution — 2480 x 1754px. Text is kept within a margin 8% in from each edge, to leave room for trimming and mounting.
Automatic text sizing
The largest font size that fits your text is calculated automatically based on how many lines you entered and how wide each line is. Half-width characters (Latin letters, half-width katakana) and full-width characters (kanji, hiragana, katakana, emoji, and similar) are given different width weights, and line spacing is set to 1.2 times the font size, so the longest line fits the canvas width and all lines fit the canvas height.
Character limits
Each line can have up to 20 characters, and you can use up to 4 lines. Characters made of a Unicode surrogate pair (such as some rare kanji or emoji) are counted as one character each. Going over the limit shows a message asking you to shorten your text.
About the outline
The outline thickness is set as a percentage of the font size: None is 0px, Thin is 3.5% of the font size, and Thick is 7%. The outline color is drawn around each line first, then the text color is filled in on top — this is what makes text readable from a distance in a crowd.
What gets sent anywhere
Everything from typing your text to exporting the PNG happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you type or create here is ever sent to a server or any external service.
FAQ
Is the text I type or the image I download sent anywhere?
No. Everything from typing your text to exporting the PNG happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is ever sent to a server or any external service.
What size paper should I print this on?
The image is sized to match a jumbo fan sign on A3 landscape paper (420mm x 297mm), so printing it at A3 — at a convenience store multi-function printer or on your own A3-capable printer — will give you a size that fits directly onto a fan sign backing.
Is there a limit on how much text I can use?
Yes, up to 4 lines with 20 characters per line. If you go over, a message will ask you to shorten your text.
Why would I want an outline around the text?
It makes the text easier to read from far away, such as from the back of a concert crowd. Choosing an outline color that contrasts with your background improves visibility the most.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes. Typing text, choosing colors, and downloading the image all work in a mobile browser.
