Pomodoro Timer | 25-Minute Work / 5-Minute Break Focus Timer

A free Pomodoro Technique timer: 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break, with a longer break every 4 sets. All durations are adjustable. Browser notifications and a sound alert let you know when a phase changes. Everything runs in your browser only — nothing is sent anywhere.

Notifications

Turn on notifications to know when the phase changes, even if you're not looking at this tab.

Your settings and timer progress are processed only in your browser and are never sent anywhere. Closing or reloading the tab resets the progress.

How to use

  1. Check the work, short break, and long break durations, and the number of sets before a long break (defaults are the standard 25/5/15 minutes and 4 sets — you can change any of them).
  2. Press "Start" to begin the countdown for the work phase.
  3. When time is up, the timer automatically switches to a break and notifies you with a notification and sound. A long break is inserted every 4 sets.

How it works

Standard durations

The defaults follow the widely used Pomodoro Technique routine (see this tool's planning notes at plan/pomodoro-timer/research.md for sources):

  • Work: 25 minutes
  • Short break: 5 minutes
  • Long break: 15 minutes
  • Sets before a long break: 4

Each value can be changed within 1–180 minutes (1–12 for the set count).

How phases progress

Each time a work phase finishes, the completed-session count increases by one. When that count is a multiple of "sets before a long break," the next phase is a long break; otherwise it's a short break. After any break finishes, the next phase is always work. Phases switch automatically the instant the countdown reaches zero, and the next phase starts counting down immediately.

About notifications and sound

When a phase changes, the timer shows a browser notification (if allowed) and plays a short beep. Notification permission is requested the first time you start the timer. If notifications are blocked or unsupported, the timer keeps working — you'll still see the on-screen change and hear the sound (subject to your device's own sound settings).

Nothing is saved

Your settings and progress (completed sessions, remaining time) exist only in the browser's memory while the page is open. Closing the tab or reloading resets everything back to the start.

FAQ

Is there a reason for the 25-minute work / 5-minute break default?

It follows the standard routine of the Pomodoro Technique created by Francesco Cirillo: 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break, repeated, with a 15–30-minute long break every 4 sets. This tool lets you change the work duration, break durations, and set count freely.

Is my configuration or timer progress sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs entirely inside your browser — no data is sent to any server.

I'm not getting browser notifications. Why?

You may not have granted notification permission, or your browser may be blocking it. Allow notifications from your browser's site settings (usually near the address bar) to get notified on every phase change. Even without notifications, the on-screen display and sound (where supported) still tell you when a phase changes.

Can I change the timer settings while it's running?

No, not while running. To avoid ambiguity about how much time is left, you need to pause the timer first before changing any settings.

What happens if I close the tab or navigate away?

Progress is kept only in the browser's memory, so closing the tab, reloading, or navigating away resets it — the timer starts fresh from the beginning the next time you open it.
